6 Interesting Facts with Maryland Birth Services Founder: Becky Rohrback

I receive some common questions from prospective families so I figured I’d address some here for our next blog!

Passionate Maryland Doula

What is your philosophy on family support?

My philosophy on family support is very unique. I do not subscribe to typical methods or structures. I believe this is what makes me a good doula for MY clients. My philosophy is “How can I best help you?”. I want to know why my clients feel the way they feel. I want to know what is working and what doesn’t work. I want to know the needs and concerns they have, and the support that might be best for their unique situation.

Why did you want to be a doula?

My personal past jobs led me to being a doula. I am a Certified Medical Assistant with phlebotomy skills. I’ve also worked closely with chiropractors and physical therapists as a Therapy Assistant. I’ve been in Internal Medicine as an Office Manager and those 3 main positions led me to understanding the need for support and community that a doula can bring to a family - particularly in pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

How would you describe yourself and your style?

4 words to describe who I am and my “style” for Maryland Birth Services, LLC: Compassionate, Funny, Hard-working and Communicative.

What resources do you leverage as foundations for your business?

The resource in my business that I use most is Evidence Based Birth (EBB). I use it because it sparks my interest to hot topics that are relevant to not only birthing clients here, but all over the world. The research EBB uses is clear and the data untouched- and I’m grateful for resources that are truthful and non biased.

What are some things that make you happy?

These things make me UBER HAPPY: coffee, chocolate, chocolate and almonds together, the beach, sunshine, flip flops, leggings, giraffes, iced coffee and mocha iced coffee.

Tools for Birth Clients

What are some tools that you use most often for birth clients?

Birth Clients

The 2 main tools that I use most often for birth clients are: my hands and my voice. My hands are used for providing counter pressure on the low back; double hip squeezes during contractions and massage for the sore and tense neck and upper back muscles. My voice repeats affirmations that clients have chosen to bring peace and centering to their labor as well as talking to their providers and support staff as labor changes and leads way to their baby being born and the postpartum time.

Postpartum Clients

The 2 main tools that I use most often for my postpartum clients is my fabric wrap and my ears. I love teaching parents to wear their newborn babies in a wrap or carrier as we discuss and implement the new tasks and responsibilities as parents and also for myself to wear baby while the parents rest and regroup. My ears have become my biggest ally in that often times just listening and being still does so much for the parents in the processing and resource needs they share with me during our postpartum visits.

I am grateful for the work I do to support growing families while also supporting self-growth and always striving to be what my families and the community needs most.

Have a beautiful day!
