Birthplace “Go Bag” Top 10

“What do I pack in my bag for my birth place?”

This question is asked very frequently by clients. I usually hear, “I have found lists on google but I feel like I might be missing something! Can you help?”.

Of course! Here is my TOP 10 Items For Your Birth Bag:

10. Socks

Seems silly but trust me, if you are spending any amount of time in a hospital, a comfy pair of socks (or three!) will prove to be a taste of home that you appreciate.

9. Lip balm

Hospitals are known for very dry air. I suggest to pack a few tubes and stash them in a several places for quick access.

8. Lotion

Pack your favorite one!! See #9 haha!

This is also another idea from home that many appreciate after their first post-birth shower.

7. Headphones and speaker

Both are helpful for certain reasons. Headphones allow mom to rest, zone out during contractions, have quiet time with a podcast, favorite songs or meditation apps. Speakers are helpful for a great distraction during labor and then your team can enjoy your music or even a movie playing in the background.

6. Favorite pillow and blanket

Having one or two things from home can be very effective at grounding and calming a laboring mom, and just as effective in supporting a great post-birth snooze in between feedings.

5. Comfy pajamas and loungewear (with lots of room)

Comfort is key while healing from birth. I usually recommend two-piece pant sets that it make easy for using the restroom and climbing in and out of bed. The top is also easily manipulated if breastfeeding.

4. Nursing bras

If you are planning on breastfeeding, having a well-fitting bra is very important and definitely more comfortable. One of my favorite to suggest in the beginning is a “Nighttime bra”. They are found in most “mothering” stores and are soft, stretchable, hold breast pads in well, and are still helpful for nursing. Oh and they wash up great too!

3. Pads and feminine items

Some people like to bring their own pads and feminine items with them. While the hospital does provide postpartum pads and underwear, some women have sensitivities that make it uncomfortable to use these products. Bringing your own trusted brand will ensure no breakouts or skin issues.

**Remember tampons are not recommended as your body is healing.

2. Your birth plan

Bring a few printed copies so that you can leave one on the counter in your birth room, one can go in your chart, and a few extras just in case! Did you know your doula can help you make a birth plan? Here at Maryland Birth Services, its a support service we option for all of our clients and one that we find extremely helpful to prepare together and plan!

  1. SNACKS!

No, there are never too many snacks one can bring to the hospital. Birth is compared to running two marathons back to back. You need snacks!

Some of my favorite things to recommend: trail mix, granola or protein bars, juice boxes (nothing like a good glass of juice with hospital crunchy-ice!), pretzels or other quick treat to grab, apple sauce packs (these are helpful during labor for a quick burst of energy too.

Don’t forget any drinks you may enjoy like coconut water, Gatorade or even your favorite tea!
